A handful of noobs at the Urban Institute are continuing with their employment justification program by inventing an "iCrime wave" theory centered around no-neck thieves stealing iPods. The institute has decided to jump on the i-naming bandwagon with the term iCrime in order to gain media headlines. It's the data turds version of serious iEnvy.
"They argue that the tantalizing gadgets are perhaps the main reason violent crime rose in 2005 and 2006 after declining every year since 1991. News reports cast the iPod as the latest must-steal item for some thugs, following in the footsteps of things like Air Jordan sneakers." Source: Sydney Morning Herald
Air Jordans? What are those? iPods are supposedly responsible for poisoning people via phthalates [link], killing the music business, making kids deaf, ruining the movie viewing experience, stunting the popularity of Zune and now ad invoking violent crimes to the list. Wow! iPods totally suck. Is it possible that the Urban Institute might be working with Greenpeace? I guess anything is possible when someone from their group is anonamously trying to add "ICrime wave" to the Urban Dictionary and lock up the domain name along with registering iRape and iTheft.
I don't buy the Urban Institutes sensational claims for one minute. iPods don't drive up the crime rates, no-neck thugs do. It may become obvious over time that the Urban Institute is working closely with another think-tank group, the Urban Legend Institute that intends to tag all future stories as iLegends in order to remain relevant. If you're truly concerned about some neckless thief stealing your iPod or iPhone, buy a Zune. It's theft-proof.
