If you own an iPhone, and you're a confirmed dude either by birth or surgical enhancement, and you also drive a new VW Beetle (by choice), then I have brilliant news for you. Nathan Barry, the same "lifehacker" dude we introduced you to with his DIY iPhone Digital Clock Stand, has fashioned a slick DIY iPhone holder from the girly VW Beetle bud vase. Finally, a mantastic option emerges!
"All I've ever used it for before was to hold a pencil, now it will hold the dock connector for my Griffin iTrip," Nathan said, "It holds the iPhone securely and safely in easy view from the driving position," "It pops on and off very easily, and it's close enough for the speakerphone mode to negate the need for any hands-free kit."
The dock connector is wedged into the carved out slots across the top of the plastic vase making for a very tight fit, allowing users to simply grab the iPhone and pull it off without disturbing the connector. I like Natan's design here because it's simple and clean, giving the appearance that the ultra-girly bud vase concept was designed for your iPhone right from start. I think Volkswagen should take a serious design cue from Nathan and offer Beetle owners their own iPhone holder to use in place of the bud vase as an option. Why not?
"Somehow I doubt it will be as popular as the clock stand." Nathan said. He may be right, but cult of iPhone Beetle owners won't care much about popularity, because it's all about their iPhone. I found several brand new genuine VW Beetle bud vases listed on Ebay for about £9.00 if you choose to take the risk out of trying Nathan's design work. That's ultra-cheap for custom hackery.
