The idea of developers having to create an additional free lite version of their paid applications to entice users to purchase the full monty is about to change for the better, with Apple finally extending In App purchases to free apps. Leaving the developer community feeling as giddy as school girls after Apple's official announcement.
The
In App Purchase feature was originally implemented for paid
applications back in June with the iPhone 3.0 update. Developers of
free apps are now clear to sell
content, subscriptions, paid upgrades and digital services as a
one-stop-shopping experience for users. Apple clarified their
intentions in this note to their legion of code warriors on Thursday.
"You can also simplify your development by creating a single version of
your app that uses In App Purchase to unlock additional functionality,
eliminating the need to create Lite versions of your app. Using In App
Purchase in your application can also help combat some of the
problems of software piracy by allowing you to verify In App Purchases."
Apple's epic App Store revision marks another small victory for a majority of developers who are yet to cash in on the iPhone gold rush. Colin Smith, co-founder and vice president of Freeverse, makers of such wildly popular iPhone games as Flick Fishing, Moto Chaser, Top Gun, and Skee-Ball, welcomed Apple's announcement with tremendous enthusiasm.
"This announcement changes the landscape of the App Store as we know it," said Colin Smith, "It's not clear just yet how quickly it will change, but you can be sure that this will be significant. Freeverse is currently discussing how to incorporate this change into our development plans."
Say goodbye to the great taste of lite apps that are less filling.
