Heavily armed with a soldering tool and an enormous supply of Red Bull, curly haired wonder teen George Hotz of Glen Rock, N.J., calmly unlocked the iPhone inside of two hours to use with his T-Mobile network, freeing his iPhone from the carrier restrictions imposed by the dark overlords at AT&T Inc. George Hotz has instantly become the "New Hotz-ness" in mobile technology news.
Hotz (screen name GeoHot) said his unlocked phone retains all the core features of the iPhone except for a visual voice mail function exclusive to AT&T. Hotz also indicated that the other small downside is the unusually loud siren that sounds whenever he travels within two blocks of any Apple Store. T-Mobile is the only major U.S. carrier apart from AT&T that is compatible with the iPhone's cellular technology making this recent hack particularly useful.
The hack procedure, which the 17-year-old wonder teen posted on his blog
last Thursday is complicated and requires some skill with both
soldering and
software, any missteps may result in the iPhone becoming useless as it
has also proven to be for those who are missing a thumb. Hotz is
currently reviewing a lucrative offer he received from DC Comics to
join a revamped "Super Friends" team that's in development. Hotz is
seriously considering the offer along with mock-up drawings, costume
suggestions and retaining the name "GeoHot" as his super hero handle. A
new Super Friends anime series is also being proposed for a 2008
release which may possibly seal the deal for Hotz.
"I would love to see myself in my own comic with the Super Friends" said Hotz, "I would collect every issue, hand sign them and then sell 'em on Ebay for mad Benjamins."
Meanwhile on the opposite side of the globe, Australian Newspaper the Herald Sun ran the George Hotz story leading with the opening line "Hackers have unlocked Microsoft's new iPhone, allowing it to be used by any network." The Herald Sun is named this weeks winner of the coveted "Golden Ass Hat Award" for masterful stupidity in journalism. (newspaper cliping posted on Flickr by Brett Jordan).
As George Hotz settles into college at RIT,
his next project will be unlocking the code that's keeping him a
restricted captive as the Mayor of Nerd Town. Popularity with millions
of dudes and media outlets pales in comparison to a solid rep
(reputation) with the ladies. Or does it? Best of luck with that hack
of the female species and your new Super Friends George.

It's a remarkable level of talent to achieve something like that. Earning a guest role with the 'Superfriends', that is.
