Special Report by Doris Flatley (UK)
LONDON - Like dozens of other British hipsters, Roger Crichlow a resident of Southeast London was a right bastard on Tuesday (September 18th) where Steve Jobs was present to announce the arrival of the iPhone in Europe at the Regent Street Apple Store, located in the heart of London's West End.
"I'm feeling done over by old Jobsy boy. No iPhone until November 9th? Bollocks! Go home yank! That's what I say!" Crichlow shouted angrily, wedged between a crowd of agitated onlookers who gathered inside the Apple Store holding out for big iPhone news.
The rumored upgrade of the iPhone, to incorporate HSDPA support in a European version, does not seem to have any validity, leaving many whiny Londoners like Roger Crichlow, bitterly disappointed. Europe will be forced to rely on the O2 Edge network, which still does not have full coverage across the U.K. A blow to customers who hoped Steve Jobs (El Jobso), may pull something new out of his hat at the London launch.
"I feel like a wanker! No 3G network and no upgrades, it's a flippin' iPhone, the same phone my mates and I played with in the states" Crichlow said, "I gave up a night of pints and football waiting for that? I'm a bit miffed and knackered at present."
The Apple iPhone is scheduled to go on sale on November 9 and will be sold exclusively in the UK through Apple's retail and online stores, O2 and The Carphone Warehouse's retail and online stores. iPhone will be available in an 8GB model for 269 pound sterling (inc VAT) which is roughly $536 US and will work with either a MAC or PC. The price for Europe represents another crowning blow for Londoners hopeful that they would benefit from Apple's mistakes with iPhone stateside.
"I'm still buying an iPhone on the 9th", Crichlow said in a hushed tone, "Don't let my mates know, they're counting on me to whip up a ruck, I don't plan to let them down just yet."
It's shortly after midnight, my iPhone rings twice, I answer, it's London calling... and they are pissed!
