"Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February. We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users." Steve Jobs stated on the Apple website Wednesday (here), pointing to yet another grand leap forward in the iPhones evolution.
This represents a dramatic turn around in the stance Apple has taken in controlling the applications consumers can put on their iPhones and trumps rumors and various other speculation that Jobs would make the announcement at The Macworld Expo in January 2008, fueled by popular Apple news websites. Wrong!
"Steve Jobs deliberately creates frustration aimed at lowering expectations on what Apple will release, then he circles back around after everyone is deflated, delivers the big news and looks like a hero," said Richard Emllik, an analyst for Financial News Daily, "He's filthy rich, it's the only fun he gets to have. He's just messing with our heads, but no one gets the joke."
Jobs' announcement is great news for iPhone developers eyeing their big chance to join a vibrant third party developer community, sure to lure other developers who joined less vibrant communities a tad premature. Apple's announcement is even better news for the long term growth of iPhone and iPhone Touch, and certainly does make Jobs looks like a hero, especially since he delivered his announcement two and a half months ahead of the reports by popular Apple news websites.
Way to keep 'em guessing Stevo!
