The long awaited iPhone 3G announcement came late into the WWDC presentation. It’s thinner at the edges, has a full plastic back, solid metal buttons, 3.5-inch display, camera, and a flush headphone jack with improved audio. Worldwide rollout date is scheduled for 8 A.M. on July 11th, 2008. A date that blows chunks for Aussies attending the Sydney Apple store opening on June 19. Several Apple stores are all saying July 11 will be the first chance to fondle a display model. That's weird.
Jobs confirmed that built-in GPS is a key part of iPhone 3G and trumpeted that iPhone 3G will sell for $199 in the 8GB model, 16GB for $299 in Black and White. The "White Boy" iPhone being introduced was originally mocked-up by the iPhone Savior back on December 20, 2007. Stores have confirmed that the svelte glow of ol' whitey will only be available in the 16GB model.
Expect much improved battery life with standby times of 300 hours. 2G talk time is up to 10 hours from 8 hours. 3G talk time is 5 hours compared to other phones which have about 3 hours. Also 5-6 hours of 3G browsing and Video playback for 7 hours (sweet!), audio is 24 hours.
Jobs also announced that the iPhone 2.0 software will be released in early July. It's FREE for all iPhone owners and $9.95 for the owners of Apple's red-headed step-child, the iPod Touch. All great news, but no video for you!
