The rumors about an early morning launch for iPhone 3G are 100% true as AT&T announced their plans today for a July 11th, 8 A.M. launch along with four individual nationwide iPhone 3G plans starting from the base of $69.99 to the unlimited premium package at $129.99 per month US. Set your alarms and let the line sitting begin!
AT&T is offering iPhone 3G at $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB model. These prices require two-year contracts and are available to the following cult of iPhone followers:
- iPhone customers who purchased before July 11
- Customers activating a new line with AT&T
- Current AT&T customers who are eligible, at the time of purchase, for an upgrade discount
The subsidy is a savings of $400. For the rest of the hangers on who are not currently eligible for an AT&T upgrade discount will have to pay $399 for the 8GB model or $499 for the 16GB model. Both options require a new two-year service agreement. Doink!
AT&T added an interesting kicker into their eligibility info stating; "In the future, AT&T will offer a no-contract-required option for $599 (8GB) or $699 (16GB)." How far into the future will that be? Is it worth the wait?
AT&T has provided a "Get iReady" website to answer questions, allowing customers to check their own eligibility. The line forms to left somewhere in the wee hours on the morning of July 11th or even July 9th for the professional line sitters. This recent announcement will only serve to flame the angry iPhone fires for Canada. Someone go tell Rogers that this is how it's done.
Not to be captain obvious here, but if you were to buy an unlocked iPhone, what carrier would you be able to use it with? Could you put in a foreign sim card? What services would you lose (i.e., Visual Voicemail, etc)?
