A lofty report has been posted by Peter Burrows of BusinessWeek claiming; "Dropped calls and choppy Web surfing on Apple's latest smartphone stem from an Infineon chip. A fix is on the way." Even though Apple has not officially acknowledged there is a performance problem with iPhone 3G.
The post indicates that Apple (AAPL) has plans to remedy the problems through a software upgrade rather than going through the heartache of launching a complete product recall, according to unnamed sources in the article, according to BusinessWeek.
Several other websites are reporting that Ny Teknik, Sweden's leading tech newspaper, has published the account of a scientist at the University of Gälve who investigated the iPhone 3G claiming that that the iPhone is not as sensitive to 3G signals as other phones.
"The iPhone 3G's nominal sensitivity is below that of published standards for 3G phones, meaning the phone drops the connection with a 3G tower more quickly than other 3G phones as it moves away from the tower and averages slower data speeds when connected." Source - Crave
The Swedish researcher alleges that a manufacturing problem is to blame for iPhone 3G's spotty wireless broadband connectivity. This research has not been validated by Apple. What has been confirmed is Apple's message boards being flooded with complaints of dropped calls and poor 3G connectivity after the July 11th launch.
"I'm having a similar problem in Manhattan. I'm always getting 5 bars, but the best speed I've seen from 3G is 66kbps and the best from Edge is 13kbps. I'm dropping calls or can't make calls at all." Mac Forum Member
"I actually swapped it out on Sunday thinking it was my iPhone. Its not. Still crummy reception, albeit AT&T is showing great 3G service." Mac Forum Member
Apple has failed to comment on reports targeting iPhone 3G glitches being the result of a hardware issues. AT&T issued a typical "Don't worry be happy" statement saying, "Overall, the new iPhone is performing just great on our 3G network." I think not!
"Two sources say Apple will likely issue a software update by the end of September—if not by the end of this month—to resolve the issues. Apple and Infineon are currently testing the fix, which will be included in a broader update of the iPhone's software." according to a MacRumors post.
Wired is conducting their own "make shift' Global iPhone 3G study (if you can call it that), encouraging iPhone 3G owners to test their iPhone 3G/EDGE download and upload speeds through TestMyiPhone.com. Wired is then asking participants to log their data onto a global map. People from Brisbane, Australia to Helsinki, Finland have chimed in with varied results.
Though issues with iPhone 3G have become like an X-File case requiring the expertise of Mulder and Scully, reports by cult of iPhone members across the globe confirm that iPhone 3G is not delivering the kind of connectivity speeds promised by Apple. It's yet to be revealed if it's truly a hardware or software problem. Either way, the iPhone is one of Apple's "crown jewels", so I'm completely confident they will do whatever necessary to correct iPhone issues with a proper fix. Come on, it's Apple people!
I want to believe.
