CUPERTINO, CA - Steve Jobs announced on Tuesday that Apple sold more iPhones during its fourth quarter than all previous quarters combined, totaling 6,892,000 units, earning about $806M from these and related products over the quarter. A stellar achievement that now ranks Apple as the third-largest mobile phone supplier in terms of revenue behind Nokia and Samsung holding first second place respectively.
Apple has easily surpassed its 10M iPhone goal for the calendar year which is a truly remarkable story for a newcomer to mobile. I found it interesting that a large percentage of iPhone 3G units have been sold internationally, with many phones sold to first-time iPhone owners. There are currently 2 million iPhones listed in inventory in 44 countries around the world.
“Apple just reported one of the best quarters in its history, with a spectacular performance by the iPhone—we sold more phones than RIM,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We don’t yet know how this economic downturn will affect Apple. But we’re armed with the strongest product line in our history.
Apple's Q4 results could not be more perfectly timed as T-Mobile gears up to officially launch their own attack of the clones on October 22nd with iPhone wannabe, the G1 Android. The climb for G1 will be steep as Google and T-Mobile attempt to breathe in some very rarefied air. It will take a significant amount of time, product updates, rebuilds and disasterous iPhone mishaps for the G1 to get close enough to shovel any snow around iPhone's peak. RIM can offer a laundry list of excuses why competing with iPhone has been nothing short of miserable. Here's a clue, RIM sold 6.1 units compared to Apple selling 6.9 million. Nuff said?
