The Boy Genius Report has unearthed a spectacular rumor that speaks of Apple's discontinued 4GB iPhone returning from its shallow grave in 3G form at the special Wal-Mart price of $99 with a 2-year contract. BGR is also responsible for reporting news that Wal-Mart will begin selling iPhone 3G on December 28th. This new nugget of goodness is only the latest in a chain of recently posted iPhone meets Wal-Mart speculation.
While the website is careful to warn that this rumor does not carry their certified stamp of approval, they've chosen to launch it all the same, knowing there's been vacancy in the Apple rumor business since MacRumors has evolved into more of a confirmed, bankable news site rather than its former incarnation as a true Apple rumor mill fueling grand speculation.
The idea of an aggressively priced, $99 iPhone would position the Jesus phone to dominate as the handset of choice for 'Joe the plummer' and the rest of America's lower-income households living on Main Street. At the end of October, ComScore released a report noting that sales to lower-income consumers had accelerated since the July appearance of the iPhone 3G, due in large part to its high-speed Internet access.
"We see that lower-income consumers are increasingly turning to mobile devices to access the Internet, to listen to music and for email," said Mark Donovan, senior analyst at ComScore. "A 'Swiss-Army knife of a device' like the iPhone offers a phone, a music player, a camera and a way to connect to the Internet, which may appeal to consumers cutting back their spending on gadgets."
