Details contained in a supposed "leaked internal memo" indicate that 488 Walmart stores will participate in an iPhone pilot program prior to launch in order to ensure that all systems are working properly before launch day. Walmart will release iPhone 3G to the public at 9am on December 28th. iPhone 8GB will be sold for ($197) and 16GB for ($297) with a required 2-year AT&T contract according to the memo. We started to receive photo confirmations via email showing in-store signs late last night.
Prior to the official launch Walmart Associates can get an iPhone 3G in what we fondly call a "Hillbilly Raffle". Here's how it works; interested associates will submit their name into a box marked 'iPhone'. Five lucky associates will have their names drawn randomly for a chance to purchase an iPhone as early as December 17th along with the shackles of a two year AT&T contract at a 15% discount. Winning a chance to purchase an iPhone 3G is not exactly an epic prize. Maybe it is if you work at Walmart.
The memo goes on to reveal that each store picked for the iPhone pilot must sell all five iPhones. That amounts to 2,440 pre-sold iPhones at a $2 discount along with with the accompanying AT&T contracts. It's times like this that make me wish I had given serious consideration to my big Wal-Mart job offer. I hate to miss out on a backwards-ass Hillbilly Raffle.
