Convincing evidence buried inside of Apple's latest iPhone firmware update 2.2.1 is pointing to a new version of their handset that's not been visible in previous firmware. The next generation iPhone has been designated as "iPhone2,1" according to MacRumors who conducted some investigative probing.
The model number for the original iPhone launched in 2007 is "iPhone 1,1" while Apple's 3G model is labeled "iPhone 1,2". Apple has been typically secretive about plans for iPhone in 2009, though some analysts have speculated that the newer iPhone may be aimed at China, omitting 3G.
"A developer tracking ad views from PinchMedia claims to have seen requests coming from iPhone 2,1 devices; the discovery suggests that test iPhones are functioning at a level which lets them connect to the web." Source: AppleInsider
