I recently discovered a website hosting a unique collection of images called "Steve Jobs On Magazine Covers", compiled by designer Sam Kuo at Kuodesign.com. The historical flashback includes magazine covers from 1981 to 2008 from all of the usual suspects like Forbes, Business Week, MacWorld and Time Magazine as just a few examples. This Jobsian cover series is staggering to view in one sitting, serving as a timely reminder of how insanely great it is being a Machead in the twenty-first century.
Kuo's collection of magazine covers is growing as more images are being submitted via email. Some headlines jumped off the covers on several publications, understanding the impact that Apple has had on our culture since the birth of the iMac and iPod. It's humorous now to see the skepticism that surrounded the younger Jobs in the 1980's, in light of the fact that he's become the iconic guru responsible for Apple's epic success story. Who knew?
One UnixWorld headline from 1983 asked; "Does Steve Jobs have a future in software?" including a quote from Jobs that read; "If we give people an alternative to Microsoft... it will have been a greater good." A statement that offered us a glimpse into the future of the Mac versus PC battle that has forced Microsoft to go on the defensive by 2009.
Another Business Week cover from July 31, 2000 reads, APPLE "Yes, Steve, you fixed it. Congrats! Now, what's Act Two?
Unfortunately current headlines featuring Steve Jobs are equally skeptical these days as Apple's beloved CEO battles with personal health issues. Hounded by the media on a desperate mission to uncover the truth about how serious Jobs' condition really is. That stark reality in no way diminishes the importance of this historic collection of Steve Jobs cover art. Important for future generations of Mac faithful that may be required to experience the cult of Apple living outside of Jobs' own reality distortion field.
New York magazine featured Steve Jobs on the cover of its June 25, 2007 issue just prior to the official launch of the iPhone on June 29. Bold letters at the bottom of the cover read; "iGod", asking the question, "Is the mighty Steve Jobs due for a fall?" I'm convinced the jury is still out on that inquiry.
The truth is out there. I want to believe.
