The number of apps being added to Apple's wildly popular iTunes App Store by ambitious developers has continued to accelerate at a rapid pace since the end of 2008, recently surging well past 25,000 apps according to the website 148Apps.
It's no surprise that games continue to grab the lion's share of attention with the entertainment and books categories trailing behind. Another rising trend that most developers are already aware of is the fact that $.99 apps are well ahead in the count representing 10,221 compared to 6,025 free apps and 3,291 apps priced at $1.99.
The volume of apps submitted to the App Store rose roughly 30% to date from December of 2008. Which makes finding new ways for apps to be discovered one of the greatest challenges facing developers as the space gets more and more crowded. Apple has not yet tooled an efficient way of navigating its 25,000 titles. The truth is, if your app is not in the top 25 of any single category it can become virtually invisible. Still the gold rush era of the App Store is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
"One of the biggest challenges that Apple's going to face is figuring out the best way to feature (thousands of applications) on a screen that's 320 (pixels) by 480," said Greg Yardley of Pinch Media." Source: CNET
The running tally of apps recorded by 148Apps does not necessarily reflect apps potentially rejected by Apple after being submitted. See the breakout of types of applications below the fold.
