Less than one week after we turned a scorching hot spotlight on the sudden
removal of three unofficial Star Trek Tricorder apps from the App Store, developer
Matthias Schorer has informed us that his Tricorder TR-580 ($.99) app has been reinstated by Apple. Great news for Star Trek fans looking for a well produced app with amazing functionality.
The oddly timed turnabout by Apple is an event that even Mr. Spock might find highly illogical taking place on the same day as the release of Star Trek in theaters. The decision came as a welcome surprise to Schorer who resides in Munich, Germany. Apple documented their approval in a letter to the developer restoring peace to the galaxy.
The wildly popular Tricorder TR-580 app was removed from the App Store after CBS issued a written complaint to Apple that the application infringed on their rights. Even though it contains no visible Star Trek markings or logos whatsoever. Two other Tricorder apps including iScanner by Adam McElhaney (Exohive) and Commander Rob's Tri Corder were also removed as a result of a similar protest by CBS.
The graphics on Tricorder TR-580 were redesigned by Andy Tudor, Lead Designer on the upcoming "Need For Speed: SHIFT" title from Electronic Arts. Tudor volunteered his services to upgrade the graphics on Tricorder TR-580 free of charge, citing his own man love for all things Star Trek. An unexpected gift that gave Schorer's iPhone brainchild a significant design boost. You will not be disappointed by this well thought out design.
A great app, now if he would only add chat functionality so we could chat with others, the scanner finds, I would pay thrice the price and declare this the greatest app available.

For my Palm V, there was a Tricorder application. I loved it. This one is good. The Palm application allowed for entering my own text. I wonder if entering my own text is a consideration for the TR-580 development in the future. Thanks
