Not long after a recent update to the app "Nine Inch Nails: access" was rejected by Apple for objectionable content, the band's outspoken frontman Trent Reznor, took to the NIN forum in order to throw a proper rock star tantrum in text form.
The content in question turned out to be the NIN song "The Downward Spiral" which can be accessed online through the app though the song does not actually reside on the iPhone app itself. After several paragraphs of fist pounding and whining with grand expletives, Reznor calms down long enough to express his deeply felt man love for Apple and iPhone while carving up the competition into bite size bits.
"Everyone - let me be clear. I love Apple products and as goofy and out-of-touch as their app approval process / policy is, I will still use them because they work 1000X better than the competition. This is not a debate, it's a fact," Reznor wrote on the NIN forum.
"The iPhone is THE most elegant, modern smartphone at this point in time and it's perfect for what we want to do with the NIN app - except for the ludicrous approval process, and that's what I want to draw attention to. Android is cool, but nobody has an Android phone. Blackberry is OK but the hardware is inconsistent and WinMo straight-up sucks balls. If Apple doesn't get it together, we will most certainly make it available to the jailbreak community. I didn't invest in this app to see it languish on the sidelines from an idiotic policy while this tour is in full swing." Reznor warns in dark tones.
Trent Reznor is most hacked off by the fact that his update is primarily a stability release aimed at fixing a bug that crashes the app for international users. “The Downward Spiral” has already been removed from the server, in hopes to appease Apple and get this bug fix through.
It's not news that the App Store approval process is a frustrating flea circus that has many developers who work from their barely livable man caves equally perplexed. The Nine Inch Nails app is the least of the App Store's finest contributions by far. Reznor needs to get over himself and patiently wait in line for Apple to sort out their absurdities just like the rest of the geeks in the village.
Weaving a tapestry of obscenities to hurl at Apple in a public forum is truly dumber than "The Perfect Drug" Versions remixes. While Trent's passion for iPhone moves me to tears, nobody likes to listen to a whiner, especially the wealthy aging rock star kind. In the immortal words of R.E.M., "Everybody hurts. You are not alone." Now it's time to sing along Trent.
