iPhone developers chomping at the bit to start deploying the wildly publicized augmented reality apps designed to find nearby subways or for tracking down family members or Twitter neighbors, will have a few more months to wait according to a report by the LA Times.
The useful overlays triggered on iPhone 3GS devices utilizing a combination of the compass, internet connection and on-board GPS are being held back for approval by Apple until sometime in September. Developers are already dreaming out loud with new apps created to take advantage of the technology, expected to be unveiled in tandem with the release of iPhone OS 3.1
"The coolest we've seen recently is a concept video for something called Augmented ID," (see video below). "The hypothetical software uses facial recognition to identify people and then display links to their social network profiles around the Web." The LA Times
