California Artist Adam Reeder, has come up with a series of fantastical sculptures created to explore how technology changes the way western culture interacts with its world. His unique vision comes to life in a series of four dramatic creations, featuring Zeus calling down thunder with his iPhone and Pan, the Greek god of nature, skillfully serenading his nymphs using an iPod instead of a flute.
The iconic Greek (geek) sculptures were Adam's masters thesis through The San Francisco Academy of Art University, where "Pan With His iPod" won first place in the University's Annual Spring Show. This extraordinary Greco-Roman collection includes Zeus With His iPhone ($34,900), Pan With His iPod ($7,900), Atlas ($39,900) hoisting up a 3rd generation iPod nano and Sleeping Gamer ($7,900) who's featured passed out in a chair dreaming of pwnage after a grueling session of Xbox Live. Both Zeus and Atlas are life-size works certain to command attention in any given space.
"This work is not about consumerism, or commercialism. Rather it is about how technology changes the way in which Western culture interacts with it’s world," Adam Reeder wrote in the Art Market Blog. "This body of work should remind the viewer of pop art, because pop art showed viewers what they were consuming in popular culture."
It's only a matter of time before Apple's iconic iPhone is cast standing alone as a breathtaking sculpture of epic magnitude. Drawing hordes of Apple faithful to the bronze shrine for daily worship. Until then, I guess a supporting role in the hand of Zeus will have to do. Calling down thunder with an iPhone... is there an app for that yet?
In Greek mythology, didn't Zeus hurl iPhone lightning bolts at Windows Mobile sheeple back in the good old days? I'm fairly certain there was an app for that.
