TomTom has officially launched their turn-by-turn iPhone car navigation system for both U.S. and Canada in the App Store for $99.99. On Sunday, international versions of TomTom's app popped up in the New Zealand App Store via iTunes, giving some clue as to what the U.S. might expect for pricing. The higher price reflected here does not include the companion car mount kit. Map coverage includes the U.S. with all states, Hawaii and Alaska plus Canada (all provinces) and Puerto Rico. The app is compatible with iPhone 3G or 3GS using OS 3.0 or later.
The optional iPhone car mount cradle (expected to be around $90) utilizes a mounted antenna for “enhanced GPS
performance”, it also charges your iPhone, provides
an
amplified speaker for turn-by-turn instructions and lets you dial
hands-free. The mount enables an easy flip to view both horizontal
and landscape orientations and integrates with your iPhone address book. The idea of having this level of navigation on iPhone really stimulates my geeky parts.
The iPhone application includes TomTom's IQ Routes that will always calculate
the smartest, most efficient route to your destination any time of day. TomTom suggests watching their Products/Accessories page for availability of their iPhone car mount kit expected to launch soon.

100 Dollars? That's a lot of money man for a GPS map.

Looks great. If i was on the road all the time I could see paying the price. But I think I will stick with Google Maps for now. Easy enough. Also, it has the street view.

The price seems to be extreme for an iPhone App. If the price was lowered this would be a big hit . I know I would certainly buy it.

I own a TomTom One (bought in 2007) and I never experienced a similar situation. Yes, it takes some time to recalculate a new direction especially in narrow streets but it recover within a minute or two at the worse.

How many companies will be replaced by "apps".

Looks good- but I wouldn't be able to say for sure before I actually use this thing.

I was waiting for an app like this...I actually prefer tom tom over google maps

I was hoping for traffic control. Since it doesn't have one I think I'll stick with my reliable dinosaur of a GPS until it does.

The TomTom mount should be great but the tape thing is probably not the best idea.
I'm using a product called the Soaripod (www.soaripod.com) that works great as a car mount but has a bunch of other applications that won't rip up your dash board.

Sounds like a useful app. No one is going to be buying GPS units anymore.

I would get this app...if I had an iPhone.

does it come with the TMS (tape-mounting-system)?

Price to steep! If that price included mount, I'd consider it.

Honestly that seems a little steep for a GPS app with no hardware with it. Oh, well...moving on.

I wasn't impressed; I'm an Aussie, so my review is slanted toward Australian consumers, but if anyone is interested, here's my review; http://shiftsolutions.net.au/2009/08/17/review-of-tom-tom-for-the-iphone/
