Many TomTom GPS fanatics have been anxiously awaiting pricing for the company's turn-by-turn iPhone navigation systsem since TomTom's CTO Peter-Frans Pauwels first unveiled their solution at Apple's WWDC in back in June.
The Handtec retail website has leaked pricing for the "TomTom for iPhone satnav app including mount" for £113.85 ($193.89 US) via pre-order according to a post on DaniWeb. While the app is yet to be released, the pricing revealed is steeper than most had anticipated and could be a buzz killer for early adopters.
"The price is for an in-car kit which includes the software (with the
latest Tele Atlas mapping and the TomTom IQ Routes feature) plus a
specially designed, and I have to admit rather sexy looking, cradle."
One question that comes to mind after viewing TomTom's demo video (after break) is, will the cradle accommodate an iPhone with case? Or will it only accept an iPhone bareback style since it's designed to hook in via the iPhone dock-connector?
The optional cradle uses a mounted antenna for “enhanced GPS performance”, designed to make it as accurate as a stand-alone unit in conjunction with the iPhone app. It also charges your iPhone, provides an amplified speaker for turn-by-turn instruction and lets you dial hands-free. The mount also enables an easy flip to view both horizontal and landscape orientations. A feature set that makes me all tingly in my geeky parts.
TomTom's stand-alone GPS units currently range in price from $119 to nearly $400, which offers some insight into why an almost $200 price point could cause resistance. While drivers might want to eliminate the need for two devices in the car by choosing TomTom's iPhone solution alone, the only thing expected to be eliminated with a $194 price tag for some might be half a week's salary.
The TomTom software application for iPhone is expected to be available through the App Store as a standalone download released later this summer. An actual launch date remains unconfirmed.

But will it have traffic alerts and suggest alternte routes? If so, it's a bargain at twice the price!

This is a great price.
If you are a cheapskate, look elsewhere.
If you want your iPhone to be the best it can be, then go right on in.
I want it and the mount. It looks fantastic!
