STYLE GUIDE: When I first eyeballed the Laptop Burka in a Craigslist ad, I was certain the idea was an elaborate hoax. It turns out that reality here is definitely stranger than fiction. I spoke to 48-year-old Marc Johnson, creator of the Laptop Burka at his Camano Island residence outside of Seattle. I asked Johnson if he really uses his own invention.
"I'm using it right now on my back patio as I research a new sewing machine," Johnson told the iPhone Savior by phone. "I made the Laptop Burka for real sunny days when I want to use my laptop outside."
Geek time at the beach, camping or even vacationing on a cruise ship can finally bring the kind of full-frontal privacy and MacBook isolation most of us have only dreamed of in public places. It works with any laptop computer, and with any ordinary hat. Imagine, no more courtesy nods to the wife and kids when you're hyper-focused on Facebook, simply hood-up with this geek-tastic tent thingy and your annoying family instantly goes bye bye.
Because his Winter Blue Burka can generate some heat while sitting in direct sunlight, Johnson is producing a Summer White version just in time for Halloween. The reflective white surface and lighter weight fabric will easily transform you into the ideal porch ghost, capable of scaring the bejesus out of trick-or-treaters without giving up quality time on Twitter. Just add a few peel and stick googly eyeballs to the front and you'll be the coolest nerd in the neighborhood.
Marc Johnson is convinced that his invention is for industry leaders, not followers. Perfect for committed Macheads conditioned to "Think Different". Some companies have even added their own corporate logos on the outside to advertise while others are hard at work. The Laptop Burka is American made in Seattle, but takes it's name from the traditional outer garment worn by Islamic women for the purpose of cloaking their entire body.
I asked Marc if he expects that sales from his fantastical geek tent would eventually allow him to quit his day job as a self-employed electrician. A job that once had Johnson working as the house electrician for Bill Gates. Of course you don’t have to be a Microtard genius to guess the answer to that question.
"I will say that it doesn't look today like I'll be quitting my day job," Johnson said candidly, "I just wanted to make something I could use. l thought it was a good idea. Everybody keeps saying the same thing to me... is this for real?"
The highly functional Laptop Burka is as real as a heart attack, offering fashionable humiliation to MacBook zombies of all ages. I don't require one myself when using my amazing MacBook Air outdoors, even in direct sunlight. But for $26 bucks, I'm confident this magical sheath will look simply fabulous draped all over YOU.
Ahh....I think they are like watching something HA HA HA
