Apple released iPhone update version 3.1.2 Thursday aimed at fixing a few minor but annoying bugs including one that locks your iPhone in a coma after going into sleep mode. Most users have found rebooting to be the only answer until now. I'm hoping that recent battery drain issues experienced since the iPhone 3.1 update will get a stealthy fix here as well.
Apple's cryptic list of fixes and improvements are listed below:
- Resolves sporadic issue that may cause iPhone to not wake from sleep.
- Resolves intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart.
- Fixes bug that could cause occasional crash during video streaming.
Users are also finding that immediately after the hefty (307 MB) update is complete, iTunes will prompt you to update your iPhone carrier settings. After the update you should restart your device as done only a few weeks back when carrier update 5.5 was deployed to support MMS. Your carrier setting will read AT&T 5.6 which you can confirm by tapping Settings> General> About.
My guess is that the 5.6 update will enable VoIP applications for calling over AT&T's 3G network. Voice Over Internet Protocol apps were previously enabled to make calls using a Wi-Fi connection only. Apple has committed to fast track developer updates to VoIP apps like Skype which will hopefully drop in the App Store sooner than later.
One user is reporting that 5.6 eliminates the tethering data usage indicator in the iPhone usage screen. More news on this as reports come in.

i'm still on the 5.5 carrier settings. i got a 3gs new and without thinking about it opened the box and plugged to itunes. before i thought about needing older firmware for exploits i updated like a fool(previous experiences with psp should have made me look before i leaped). at any rate i was up late one night and saw someone blogging about blackra1n. after a month of suffering i'm now running themes and emulators forsome of my fav classic console games on my iphone with 3.1.2. for fear of losing any of my jailbreak privilages i still have not updated carrier settings. anyone know a site that lists exploits killed by firmware versions / carrier settings?

I don't have 5.6, still 5.5, and the tethering data usage is gone. Maybe a 3.1.2 thing?
