A wild rumor is being shot from a loose cannon by Boy Genius Report, that Apple and AT&T are gearing up to launch an 8GB iPhone 3GS device in time to stimulate holiday shoppers. The move is said to be aimed at hacking off the Motorola Droid phone which is on sale now for $200 (after a $100 rebate).
"We’ve heard now from two sources that AT&T, and we guess Apple, are contemplating launching an 8GB iPhone 3GS at the $99 price point before Christmas. One source said this was AT&T’s way of combating the DROID madness." Source - BGR
A cheaper iPhone 3GS would replace the current $99 8GB iPhone 3G, offering potential buyers a faster processor, more RAM, a digital compass and a better 3.2 megapixel camera capable of shooting video. It all sounds nifty except for the fact that iPhone 3GS is currently Apple's top tier iPhone offering.
While releasing a cheaper 3GS model with minimal storage may attract some smartphone buyers teetering on the edge of Droid infatuation, the move could serve to undermine sales of Apple's premium handset. It's yet to be seen if this rumor has any real legs. If it does, it just may be a sexy enough lure to draw in the undecided.
I would prefer that Apple finally release a limited edition iPhone Red for the holidays, matching the new Apple store shirts being worn by staffers at the newest Paris store at the Carrousel du Louvre shopping center.
But that's wishful thinking.
