It may not be long now before iPhone 3GS and iPod touch gamers everywhere are playing Super Mario 64. ZodTTD, the developer responsible for bringing us the Game Boy Advance emulator for iPhone (gpSPhone), has officially announced he's currently working on a port of N64 for the iPhone 3GS and the 3rd-generation iPod touch. Note that this will require an jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch.
The dev believes that Apple’s latest devices are the fastest handhelds in terms of raw CPU performance. Both iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3rd gen boast a faster GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) allowing for the OpenGL ES 2.0 specifications required to port Nintendo 64."You may soon see N64 on your favorite Apple device," Zodttd said in his original announcement, "But I can’t promise it will run games top notch just yet, as things are too early to say. There’s hope though, with a 3D accelerated graphics plugin, as well as an ARM dynarec." Source - ZodTTD
The biggest hurdle may prove be the screen real estate needed to accommodate authentic N64 game control. Zodttd confirmed his confidence that "Things look good for this project." If pulled off properly, the result could be amazing! A release date has not been set.
(Note: will require a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch)
