There's no debating that 2009 was a banner year for iPhone news including Apple's launch of iPhone 3GS and witnessing the App Store surpassing over 100,000 apps in circulation. It was interesting and mostly mind-numbing to look back and see what were the most popular stories iPhone faithful were reading here at this highly dysfunctional web destination you all know as the iPhone Savior.
We offer our warmest thanks and appreciation to all of you for being part of our 2009 cast of readers and hope you'll find the work of our cracked team of iPhone news hounds worthy to revisit in 2010. I now present to you our almost epic list of Top 10 Most Popular Posts of 2009.
1. iPhone Developer Quits Day Job After 'iShoot' Hits Number One - In January of 2009 developer Etan Nicholas, creator of iShoot, announced he was quitting his day job at Sun Microsystems to develop iPhone apps full time. In a few short months Nicholas hauled in $600 thousand dollars from iShoot as one of the first big winners in the iPhone app gold rush.
2. An iPhone App That Can Light Up Your Tree - In the "12 Apps of Christmas" holiday iPhone Ad, Apple promoted Schlage Link as "an app that can light up the tree". It became one of the hottest Google searches overnight. We received hundreds of hits each time that ad aired in the US and the UK. A huge post!
3. 'Spell Number' App Unleashes Free iPhone Emoji - This post still remains one of our most active from search engine traffic. Last we heard, iPhone users are still using this free app for Emoji icons.
4. This DIY iPhone 3GS Box Dock Is Simply Perfect - This do-it-yourself project that recycles any useless iPhone 3GS box into a charging station, caused a storm of interest from iPhone fanatics. It was one of more original ideas that emerged out of the wildly popular iPhone dock meme. The Santa Baby iPhone cheese dock is the only other dock that came close to matching the interest generated from this one.
5. Star Trek Communicator for iPhone Is Spot On - The cult of Star Trek merged with iPhone faithful to make this app explode with ginormous attention. Both Gizmodo and Geekologie helped make this one a force to be reckoned with. The app eventually vanished from the App Store without a trace.
6. Sketchy "Baby Shaker" iPhone App Yanked From App Store - Apple's App Store woes jumped into full swing once the Baby Shaker app made major headlines across the globe. Shake a baby until it stops crying? Yep, there was an app for that. The teen nude Beauty Meter app fiasco took a close second in popularity.
7. Wall Street Journal Achieves Ad Placement Fail - On September 10th the WSJ showed two skeletons inserted next to an article entitled "Steve Jobs Returns To Center Stage At Apple", featuring a shot of the gaunt Jobs on stage at the company's big iPod event. Was it just coincidence?
8. Apple Store Tricks Kids With Bookmarks As Halloween Treats - This little exclusive Apple store treat caused wild commotion on a generally slow news weekend. It was picked up by dozens of tech sites around the globe in under an hour.
9. iPhone PlayStation Case Gives Me Warm Fuzzies - The idea of a PlayStation Console case for iPhone pushed the custom iPhone felt case revolution into full swing. This post generated a massive response and was quickly re-posted on dozens of major tech websites. We expect iPhone fashion to be all the rage in 2010.
10. Lego My Apple MacBook Fills Me With Happy Gas - An over-sized Lego Minifig decal slapped onto a MacBook holding the Apple logo became huge news in the US, Japan and the UK. Gizmodo helped us put this non-iPhone news on the map. Lego fans gobbled it up whole.
Massive thanks go out to the following websites for helping to bring our twisted work to the masses: MacSurfer, Gizmodo, TUAW, Cult of Mac, Wired, Fake Steve Jobs, Gearfuse, Krapps, All Things D, iPhoneography, TouchArcade, AppStoreHQ, Make, Mashable and Geekologie.
