Apple's arbitrary witch-hunt for apps that contain "overtly sexual content" marches forward with My Boys ($1.99), the latest victim burned at the stake of re-imagined App Store standards. Exactly what those standards are, remains a moving target for developers who can only guess what Apple will deem as too sexual. Especially when apps like Asian Hot Sexy Girls still remain.
In this case, the My Boys app contains four computer generated beefcakes, shake your iPhone and off comes their painfully generic clothing, revealing muscular chiseled flesh subjected to ungodly layers of spray tanning. Say hello to Chris, Marlon, Jake and Alexi. The new millennium version of G.I. Joe with life-like hair or possibly the new cast members of Jersey Shore.
"We have decided to remove any overtly sexual content from the App Store, which includes your application.' Apple wrote in an email.
My Boys developer Steve Cannon, is still recovering from the shock and awe delivered to him by Apple in an email. The message was a clone of the one Jon Atherton received this past week when his Wobble iBoobs app was also removed from the App Store after being branded as overtly sexual content.
"Cartoon guys without a shirt is overtly sexual content?" Cannon wrote to the App Review bots at Apple. "You see men without shirts on any beach and many public places (where children are present) and of course on every episode of 'Cops'. You're being ridiculous and funny!!"
It's obvious that Apple is on a campaign to redefine exactly what "overtly sexual content" really means. Once an app is branded by the company and tossed into the reject pile, developers have little recourse to defend against the too sexy badge of dishonor. There will be no trials here, except for a select few developers who may get to air their grievances in the court of public opinion.
As Cannon stated, Apple is being ridiculous by accusing four computer generated, speedo wearing, muscle marys of being overtly sexual. I'm convinced that My Boys is guilty of committing several atrocities against iPhone users, but displaying sexually overt content is not one of them.
“There will be no more applications that are for any purpose of excitement or titillation”. One developer was told by an Apple employee, "This included swimsuits — both bikinis and one-piece suits." Source - TechCrunch
Developers should take the recent turn of events as fair warning that a new era of iPhone purity has begun. The puritan age of the App Store has arrived in tandem with the unveiling of the iPad. Apple has left developers with two clear options. Nut up or shut up. Take your pick fellas.
We have to proud of Apple. Give a plus for them who care about this issue.
