Twitter founder Evan Williams officially announced on the company blog that the wildly popular Tweetie 2 app for iPhone has been acquired by Twitter.
Tweetie 2 ($2.99) will be relaunched as Twitter's official iPhone app with the re-imagined version offered to iPhone users for free.
"We're thrilled to announce that we've entered into an agreement with Atebits (aka Loren Brichter) to acquire Tweetie, a leading iPhone Twitter client." Evan Williams told his tweet-heads on the Twitter blog.
Twitter is also formulating plans to release an iPad version of their app once Loren Brichter is comfortably situated inside the company nest. It appears the little Twitter bird is growing up.
Expect a proper coming out party to follow when "Twitter" relaunches in the App Store. Farewell Tweetie, you are my most used and most favorite iPhone app over all the rest.
