After a painfully long stutter-start, Alaska Airlines has begun installing Aircell's Gogo Inflight Wi-Fi service on six Boeing 737-800's operating within the continental United States. The Seattle-based airline is planning to outfit the majority of their 737-800 and 900 aircraft this summer. The remainder of their fleet will get Gogo Inflight Internet by the end of 2010.
High flying naughty net surfers will not have content blocked, but the airline has made it clear that Skype-like VOIP services or voice communications will not be allowed. Inflight Wi-Fi will become active for iPhones, iPads and MacBooks once the plane climbs above 10,000 feet.
Ticket holders can expect to pay $4.95 for 1.5 hour flights; $9.95 for laptops and $7.95 for mobile devices for flights lasting 1.5 to 3 hours; and $12.95 for laptops and mobile devices for flights longer than three hours.
Passengers can create a Gogo account and sign up for the service before they fly or you can also register before departure at the boarding gate. The service is being offered free until July 31 by entering the promotional code ALASKAVISA on the login screen.
The idea of inflight Wi-Fi on shorter domestic flights will be celebrated by West coast sports pigs and nudey site surfers alike. Of course those awkward and uncomfortable moments come free with your inflight service. Your internet enabled middle seat awaits.
This is enough. Wifi is enough for me to chat on air.
