In their latest iPhone app update 2.0.1, Skype has now added background multitasking for iOS 4 along with graphics to support iPhone 4’s Retina Display.
"A brand new version of the app allows you to make calls with high quality sound, and supports multitasking." Skype wrote on their blog. "This means you can receive Skype calls while other apps are running, even when your iPhone is locked."
Skype also announced that their original plans to charge for calls made over a 3G network are being scrapped in favor of free 3G calls for all users. The company announced at the end of May, that fees for making 3G calls would begin in January 2011 after the 2010 trial period ended.
In my initial tests using Skype 2.0.1 running in the background performed as promised. I received a call even while my device was locked which is a huge upgrade for iPhone faithful. It worked equally as well while I had several other apps opened.
Launch the Skype app, leave it running in the background, and you can expect it to function just like your AT&T account — as long as the incoming calls are initiated from a Skype account. Skype also offers personal paid online numbers along with some unlimited calling plans starting as low as $2.99 per month.
Multitasking requires iOS 4 and an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, or a third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009).
Finally. Does it support push notifications for those of us with a 2G iPod Touch?

Great news for all of the iPhone users out there. I just wish Skype would finally get an official Android App so that I can enjoy using the service again. Hopefully soon?
