Japan's big boys of sumo wresting are about to get a brand new toy. The Sumo Association announced on Monday that it will distribute iPads to Japan's 51 "stables", or the clubs the wrestlers
belong to, with the aim of improving communication among the roly-poly
grapplers. The use of fax or telephones to contact individual stables in the past has often led to miscommunication.
"We will
hand out the newest iPads to all the sumo stables to swiftly communicate what we
need to," association vice chairman Hiroyoshi Murayama told Reuters.
Apple's magical iPad which starts at 48,800 yen ($570) in
Japan, was a likely choice since many stablemasters do not use
computers and wrestlers are not good at punching in messages on
their mobile phones with their big hands, Jiji news agency
said.
The Sumo Association's recent investigations into charges of
illegal gambling, assault and drug use among its wrestlers
have been hampered by typical fax and telephone messages failing to get through. The association is pinning their hopes on the iPad to change all that.
It's expected that downloads of Angry Birds HD will see a considerable spike shortly after stablemasters realize it's one of iPad's must-have games.
