Five short hours after the Skyfire Web Browser app for iPhone hit the App Store on Wednesday, purchases for the fledgling app were brought to an abrupt halt. Skyfire developers declared the app 'sold out' after the company's servers were overwhelmed by user traffic.
The Skyfire app was designed to deliver a remote Flash to HTML5 conversion service to iPhones, allowing iOS users to freely view Flash video content from the web. But only hours after its debut, Skyfire exited the App Store as quickly as it arrived.
"The user experience was performing well for the first few hours, but as the surge continued, the peak load on our servers and bandwidth caused the video experience to degrade." Skyfire labs wrote on their blog.
"We are effectively ‘sold out’ and will temporarily not accept new purchases from the App Store. We are working really hard to increase capacity and will be accepting new purchases from the App Store as soon as we can support it."
Just before falling off the radar, Skyfire Web Browser became the top grossing app in iTunes and grabbed the top spot in the Utilities category. Early adopters of the smart browser who paid $2.99 when the iPhone utility launched are now among an elite group of new users.
Early reports indicate that load times for converting Flash video content to HTML 5 for viewing can take 15-25 seconds to load. The Skyfire Web Browser does not work with Hulu and it doesn't support Flash games or apps either. For now, it's hurry up and wait for the highly anticipated second coming of Skyfire for iPhone.
