Three close friends who grew up together in Fresno, California have imagined a fantastical iPhone app that teaches users how to roll their own crowd pleasing, monster joints like a seasoned pro.
While it's impossible to verify how many of the 25,000 early adopters of the free Roll Your Own iPhone app are actually committed weed wranglers, one thing is certain, the early success of this instructional app may signal the start of a 'rolling for dummies' revolution.
The Roll Your Own iPhone application shows users how to carefully master rolling techniques including the "Classic" and "Classic with Crutch". You'll also find pounds of detailed photos along with well crafted step-by-step videos. The preparation section offers user friendly tips on mixtures, papers, packing and crutches for an optimized rolling experience. Making it a perfect iPhone companion even if your drug of choice is simply smoking tobacco laced with nicotine.
Roll Your Own was approved by Apple for an App Store debut on December 22, 2010. Shortly after launch some 25,000 iPhoners starting downloading the app practically overnight, thanks to coverage from tech blog Gizmodo.com and The Huffington Post.
What's even more impressive is that nearly 1,000 people have already opted in for the three additional rolling techniques featured for $.99 as an in-app-purchase. One of those techniques includes the impressive "Crowd Pleaser" which is clearly more than a handful and buyers can expect even more to come.
I reached out to the developers of Roll Your Own and learned that the collective members of Steah Mobile Apps, haven't quit their day jobs just yet.
"While these numbers are exciting to us, two of us still live in trailers and I’m currently living at my father’s home on food stamps," Noah told the iPhone Savior. "So, at this rate, I'm not anticipating moving out any time soon."
I asked Noah how the concept for this wildly popular iPhone app originally came about and if he's received many submissions from people offering up their own epic rolling suggestions.
"We got the idea from a 74 year-old friend who suggested we make an app on rolling," said Noah, "We love hearing users' suggestions. We are incorporating some of the more distinctive and creative rolling technique requests into new additional packs we are currently working on."
The creative team at Steah Mobile are feverishly brainstorming a handful of fresh ideas aimed at building momentum for Roll Your Own which includes contacting some well-known “high rollers” to endorse thier little app that could.
"We’re thinking along the lines of Snoop Dogg, Willie Nelson, Woody Harrilson, Lil Wayne, Cheech and Chong," said Noah. "For now we are just really thankful for everybody’s support and we’re stoked that Steve (Jobs) gave us a virtual high five for Roll Your Own."
After deliberately downloading the additional rolling seminars myself via the in-app-purchase, I'm convinced that these three amigos from Fresno, California are onto a lucrative idea that's poised for gargantuan success, providing they make the right connections.
With almost zero competition for rolling instructions in the mobile space, this unique app may be perfectly timed to reach a generation of do-it-yourself smokers in need of some simple basic training. Apple's green light into the App Store was the first big corporate endorsement Steah needed to make a run at striking it rich in the iPhone goldmine.
With medical marijuana perscriptions being handed out by some California Doctors like it was sunscreen, it's possible that this handy mobile school of rolling could become the hottest must-have item since the Snuggie.
Except nobody wants to kick back with friends and smoke a Snuggie.
Dumb hippie losers!

While I think this app is amusing, this is typical and well, ironic:
"While these numbers are exciting to us, two of us still live in trailers and I’m currently living at my father’s home on food stamps," Noah told the iPhone Savior. "So, at this rate, I'm not anticipating moving out any time soon."
Here's an idea, stop smoking weed and get rid of your expensive phone. Two steps toward getting out of your Dad's basement.

I don't think an iPad version is necessary, but this one should really "hit". Very innovative.
