Remember how disappointed everyone was about the new iPhone being a 4S rather than a completely redesigned iPhone 5? Well apparently people were not that bummed out: Apple is reporting over 4 million iPhone 4S devices sold in just three days. A number that esily doubles the success of the original iPhone 4 launch.
In addition to dual-core A5 chip that boosts processing speeds, and an 8 mega pixel camera with advanced optics, it's the iPhone 4S intelligent assistant Siri, that has captured the imagination of users. Siri lets you get things done just by asking.
But on the heels of Apple's record sales announcement, scores of iPhone 4S users continue to report via Twitter on Monday, that Siri is still not functioning as promised. Although I had no problem connecting to Siri starting late Saturday afternoon and throughout Sunday myself, early Monday morning I began getting the message; "Sorry I am having trouble connecting to the network" once again.
Apple Support indicated that they're not calling the inability to make a meaningful connection with Siri "an emerging issue". The Apple support representative called the problem "a network issue", pointing blame at either my cellular network or my Wi-Fi, which are the only ways that Siri connects.
"It's actually a network issue," Apple Support told me. "The resolution is check your network connection or try again later."
On Saturday, Apple Store Specialists from three separate locations I called confirmed that the company was having connectivity problems due to immense demand from new users.
"The Siri network has been getting swamped," said one Apple Specialist. "We are currently working on getting it fixed."
It appears that Apple is not quite ready to take the blame for making a proper connection with Miss Siri. Meanwhile a number of new users are left frustrated, unable to connect with what may be the most profound feature on their new iPhone 4S. Such is the price to be paid by early adopters.
“iPhone 4S is a hit with customers around the world, and together with iOS 5 and iCloud, is the best iPhone ever.” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s SVP of Worldwide Product Marketing.
Thanks for that Phil, but your enthusiasm for sales is not helping me with Siri.
