Several hours after The New York Times posted what was said to be the final words of Steve Jobs, in a eulogy written by his sister Mona Simpson, the domain name ohwowohwowohwow.com went live online.
"Steve’s final words were: OH WOW. OH WOW. OH WOW." said Mona Simpson about her brother as he passed over into the great hereafter.
A shameless opportunist from Great Britain apparently snatched up the domain name at roughly 7:41 PM on Sunday, October 30th according to the registrant info found on the official WHOIS database. While this website launch might be a well-meaning tribute, the timing makes it suspect.
A small black and white image of Steve Jobs sits at the bottom right of the generic looking home page. The website's first post entitled "Steve Jobs final words", simply links to the eulogy post from The New York Times followed by a meaningful quote on death by Apple's beloved Co-founder.
Steve himself said: ”Death is very likely to be the single best invention of life because death is life’s change agent”
Although this crude domain snatching may look like grand douchery in the first degree, it must also be noted that the ability to shout "FIRST!" across the world wide interwebs is one priceless quest which knows no honorable boundaries. After all... somebody was going to do it!
Is this what Steve Jobs meant when he said; "stay hungry, stay foolish" ? I expect to find the "OH WOW. OH WOW. OH WOW." quote screened across t-shirts, iPhone cases and coffee mugs by the end of the week. Is this how we've learned to "think different" ?
My overwhelming distain for this kind of insensitive exploit can be summed up in two simple words: OH WOW! You can quote me on that.
