Famed photographer Annie Leibovitz, caused quite a stir among iPhone faithful when she referred to Apple's smartphone as "the snapshot camera of today." during a televised appearance on Rock Center with MSNBC anchor Brian Williams last night. Her unexpected answer came when Williams asked Leibovitz what camera she might recommend to people who would inquire.
"It's a pencil, it's a pen, it's a notebook..." Leibovitz said describing other uses for her iPhone. She waxed on about being amazed at how many people show her photographs of their children by pulling out an iPhone like "the wallet with the family pictures. It is so accessible and easy." she said.
When Leibovitz grabbed her iPhone to snap an impromptu photo of Brian Williams on set, she utilized the Volume (+) up button as the camera shutter. A new iOS 5 feature that had many iPhone users buzzing in chat forums after watching the broadcast.
Annie Leibovitz is best known for her work as chief photographer at Rolling Stone magazine. It was her intimate celebrity portraits that helped define the rock publication from the early 1970's until she left in 1983.
Even though she appeared on Rock Center to promote her new book entitled Pilgrimage, it was her commentary on Apple's iPhone that made the clip a sensation for Leibovitz on Wednesday afternoon. At last count I discovered well over five pages of headlines about the televised event in a Google search. It appears iPhoneography just gained a ginormous leap forward thanks in part to an unplanned endorsement from the lips of Annie Leibovitz. That's priceless. But not so great news for noted camera brands, which may be forced to sell at a discount.
