Apple shut down its 5th Avenue store at 10 P.M. Thursday night in preparation for their grand re-opening of the iconic retail location scheduled for 10 A.M. on Friday. The store is typically open for business 24/7, 365 days a year. The store is recognized as one of the world's most photographed landmarks.
The original glass cube flagship store that's been a signature on 5th Avenue since it opened on May 19, 2006, has been overhauled under a $6 million dollar redesign plan. The individual pieces of glass will drop from the original 90 to just 15 in the completed redesign. Changes will not affect the size of the cube, they will only improve its appearance.
"The new cube looks kinda glassier and more shiny like," said Elam Nikserof, one of twelve enthusiastic people who celebrated the grand reopening event this morning. "I'm not exactly sure what changed for six million dollars, but it sure does look great."
Friday's event drew a fair crowd of New Yorkers who turned the construction site into a make-shift memorial for Apple Co-Founder Steve Jobs after his passing early last month. The unveiling of the new design this morning quickly turned into, move along folks... nothing to see here shortly after 10 A.M.

Technically speaking, there are more than 15 pieces of glass. 15 panels of glass make up the walls, 2 pieces of glass for the doors, 1 for the glass awnings above the doors, and another 12 pieces of glass make up the structure giving support to the roof. That makes at least 30 pieces of glass, but still impressive looking.
