I've been enjoying custom destop icons for my Mac files and folders longer than I can recall, but I thought this recent set of "Heroes & Villains" created by David Lanham for The iconfactory is especially remarkable.
Wolverine, Hulk and Thor are my own favorites, although I couldn't resist the bonus Mario who is another stand out icon in this set. Using these freeware buddies to replace your standard issue Mac icons is easy and not a permanent deal. You can have fun changing them out as often as you like.
Here is the step-by-step method for manually setting a folder icon:
- Select a file or folder that has the icon you want to use.
- Press Command-Option-I to bring up the Inspector panel.
- Click on the top left icon once. You'll see a highlighted border around the icon.
- Press Command-C to copy the icon. Do NOT close the inspector panel.
- Select the file or folder that you want to customize (or replace).
- Click that icon in the Inspector panel and press Command-V to paste the icon.
- To remove icons follow steps 1-3 then Click delete to return to the default icon.
The super Heroes & Villains set includes 28 illustrated icons featuring Red Skull, Iron Man, Superman, Catwoman, and Carnage among the cast of familiar comic book characters.
Although custom icons are not for everybody, they are a really fun way to give any Mac a unique flavor all its own. The iconfactory has several other custom freeware icon sets to explore and download.
