One new year's resolution that might not be obvious to those of us who've not yet become attached to Facebook like it's a prosthetic third arm, is the idea of a social networking sabbatical. A vacation from Facebook? Is this some kind of a joke?!
Designer Ivan Cash has launched a new web project he's calling Facebook Sabbatical 2012 which poses the idea of taking a mini-Facebook vacation as a new year's resolution. Cash is convinced that living a better and more fulfilling life in the new year must include "slowing down and resisting distraction" by choosing to unplug from our constant social connections on Facebook.
"With so many ways to connect, it's evermore difficult to unplug." Ivan Cash writes on his new website.
Cash credits inspiration for his project from Pico Iver's essay in the New York Times entitled "The Joy of Quiet", where the writer elevates the concept of true joy derived from being absorbed in a book, a conversation or a piece of music.
“Distraction is the only thing that consoles us for our miseries,” the French philosopher Blaise Pascal wrote in the 17th century, “and yet it is itself the greatest of our miseries.” Pico Iver's included in his post.
Is our iPhone-obsessed culture really prepared to hit the pause button on the distractions of Facebook by diminishing the constant noise and chatter that draws attention away from those things in the offline world that truly matter? Ivan Cash is certain that taking a couple of days, a week or even a month off from Facebook is the only hope we have of slowing down and finding inner peace. It's a way to regain perspective about the impact of social networking on daily life.
The website provides 3 pre-designed profile picts (see above) that you can use to alert your planet of rabid followers about your new resolution for slowing down. Mr. Cash also provides a handy status update that's ready to post at will.
"Dear Facebook, It's not you, it's me. I just think we need some time apart."
I've decided to select a one month sabbatical for myself, with grand plans of transferring my Facebook time into some much needed gym time and offline reading. It feels like the ideal way to kick off this brand new year. Wow! I feel better already.
Wishes and resolutions are very common in the start of the year but as the days goes by people forget. I hope that
