Late Night host Jimmy Fallon, wants to be right there next to you every morning when it's wakey, wakey time. So roll over and let Jimmy take over!
His new iPhone app, Wake Up Call ($.99), is the kind of alarm clock that puts the fun back into bedtime with fake calls from Jimmy Fallon. The app comes loaded with 17 unique voice messages from Jimmy and 10 perfectly cheesy ringtones capable of rousing the sleeping dead.
The alarm goes off with a ringtone and an iPhone message screen that shows Jimmy Fallon is calling. You can either hit the snooze button or answer Fallon's life affirming call. This app pushes past being simply a novelty act by including an impressive design and user experience.
What I really like about Wake Up Call is that it includes three slick clock designs with a retro-style, turquoise blue glow along with date and weather display. Another great feature is that the analog, digital or flips clocks are selectable by swiping left or right and can used in landscape or portrait mode.
One minor drawback is that the sound from Fallon's alarm doesn't function when your iPhone is set to vibrate, like Apple's native alarm app does. The app works best when it's plugged in and vibrate is turned off. While that's been a buzz killer for some, I'm confident it won't slow down sales which have already exceeded expectations since its debut just over two weeks ago.
I spoke to one of the app's creators at Sparklefarmer who confirmed that a fix for the vibrate issue is bit trickier to overcome, but he insured me that his developers are definitely working on it.
"We're working on the best way to get the app to work with vibrate on," said Gavin Purcell. "The only way to really make it work is doing something that Apple might not be cool with, so we're trying to get it right before releasing it."
A recent app update has settled a few minor bug fixes and added an essential user instruction page along with a some other subtle improvements. Which is why I'm giving Wake Up Call a rating of (4) Jay Leno Chins out of a possible five.
The next planned update will include a handful of additional calls from Jimmy and a new weather wake up setting that sounds hysterical. Jimmy's calls will be based on whatever the weather is in your local area. So if it's raining you might be getting a call from Jimmy while being soaked in a rain storm.
It's obvious that Fallon and the developers behind Wake Up Call are committed to evolving this app with the kind of features and benefits that will make it a must-have with updating. I desperately want to be woken up by Fallon's impression of Neil Young or even Bob Dylan playing one screeching note on the harmonica. That one might just wake up my entire neighborhood.
