Before iOS developers on the West Coast could hit the snooze button on their iPhone alarm clocks — 5,000 tickets for Apple's annual 2012 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) were sold out. Ticket sales priced at $1599 (USD) each for the five-day conference starting on June 11th, sold out in under two hours compared to last year which took 12 hours.
Apple announced ticket sales on Wednesday morning at 8:30 AM Eastern Daylight Time as time stamped on the Business Wire press release — by approximately 7:30 AM Pacific Time, the website posted “Sorry, Tickets Are Sold Out”.
West Coast devs barely had a chance to respond to the ticket sales announcement before the party was already over shortly after the crack of dawn. Apple made a point to announce in their press release that videos of all technical sessions from their WWDC 2012 would be available to view for free after the conference at (developer.apple.com/videos).
It's obvious that the free videos are a consolation prize aimed at taking some of the sting out of Apple's early morning "you snooze you lose" announcement.
“The iOS platform has created an entirely new industry with fantastic opportunities for developers across the country and around the world.” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.
Having ample time to grab WWDC tickets does not appear to be included in Apple's list of “fantastic opportunities for developers across the country and around the world”. Maybe someone will design a protest app for that.
So, did you get tickets for WWDC 2012 or are you planning to apply for the student scholarship program?
