Most of us will agree that Apple Maps which officially launched with iOS 6 on September 19 has failed on several levels — most importantly as a proper replacement for Google Maps that has been a native app for iPhone since 2007.
With that said, Apple deserves some credit for not only taking public accountability for such an uninspired gaffe, but also for offering up a suggested list of apps in the App Store as an alternative to driving users off in the wrong direction.
Who cares what Steve Jobs would have done about the Maps disaster — he's gone man. So get over it Chris!
Apple chief executive Tim Cook, apologized to customers on Friday in a letter posted on the company's website.
"We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better." Cook wrote.
"While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app."
The collection of 13 featured apps — both free and paid — will have to suffice for the time being until Apple gets their Map-tastic undertaking in control. While I haven't tested every app yet — so far the free MapQuest app is pretty solid compared to their web version.
You'll find each choice has its pros and cons. For those holding out for a return of Google Maps — no one is certain that's actually going to happen. So don't hold your breath.
If Apple has to come down from the hill their on in order to acsend to much greater heights with their own Maps app in the near future — I'm convinced doing it with a tad of humility never hurts.
