The “Instagram for Haters” is exactly how Jake Banks describes his new social networking app called “Hater” — a kind of antidote to Facebook's Like culture which encourages its users to “share the things you hate with the people you love”.
This free iPhone app is designed to connect into a community drunk from the non-stop guzzling of haterade. After registering, you can instantly tap the “Dislike” button and begin slapping a thumbs down on the popular stuff that everyone else hates — like Meter Maids, Kim Kardashian doing the duck face or that mostly annoying Flow character from Progressive Insurance TV commercials.
If that kind of obvious fare is not your bag, simply start posting photos of your own through the app and then rant on about your brand of certifiable hatred.
The ability to post avid dislikes directly to Facebook and Twitter could ultimately make Hater a social media contender by empowering untold thousands to dislike stuff all day long after the thumbs down posts start showing up. Potentially elevating the act of constant complaining into a wildly popular social phenomenon.
Is Hate is the new Like?
“It’s important to have a conversation about something you dislike. Hating something for change is a big thing,” CEO Jake Banks told Digital Times.
“Whether the hate is for gun control or traffic every morning on my way to work… all your opinions help create a message. Besides, everyone has something they love to hate on.” Banks added.
While the app has been getting a lot of positive press since it launched on March 8th — some iPhone users have ironically become instant haters of the Hater app due to some obvious instability with this fledgling offering that's plagued by frequent crashes.
I experienced several crashes myself after launching Hater along with multiple requests to log in over and over. I just hate that!
No matter how much good press a developer snags out of the gate — it's rare to get a second chance to make a first impression with iPhone users once your app starts getting trashed by Crashy Crasherson. Many can be simply merciless when experiencing that kind of launch Fail with a brand new app.
Let me quote the immortal words of Sweet Brown; “Ain't nobody got time for that!”
