Apple is expected to introduce iPhone 5S at a special media event on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 — with the addition of a fingerprint sensor in the Home Button according to sources reporting to AllThingsD.
The handset debut will include the redesigned, next-generation iOS 7 on board — a completely new user interface driven by Apple's SVP of Industrial Design Jony Ive.
Even though iOS 7 was officially unveiled back in June at Apple's WWDC 2013, the developers Beta 5 release of the new mobile operating system reveals some small enhancements including the install screen changing colors to individually match black or white models.
While updated processor speeds and camera are typical guesses by most — it's the fingerprint sensor inside the Home Button that's grabbing all the attention since Apple acquired AuthenTec for $356 million last summer. Most expected the fingerprint scanning feature to launch with iPhone 5, so it's no surprise that the same hype is driving the iPhone 5S launch.
Apple waited until the unveiling of iPhone 4S to include a dual-core A5 Chip, an all new iPhone camera, 1080p HD video recording along with the introduction of Siri and iCloud.
As evidenced by the announcement of redesigned iOS 7 — I'm expecting that iPhone 5S will pack a real punch if Apple expects to contend with a recent dip in its global market share.
Although it's unlikely Apple will introduce the long rumored iPhone-friendly smartwatch in September — that move could prove to deliver a significant buzz for the company in tandem with the launch of iOS 7.
I'm convinced it will take more than an incremental iPhone update for Apple to solidify its leadership position as a technology innovator. Just another iPhone update event will not be enough — not this time around.
