The glass storefront window and security gate of the Apple Store at The Promenade mall in Temecula was left in shambles on Thursday after a brazen burglary attempt took place in the early morning hours around 4:47 a.m.
According to Temecula police Sgt. Dean Spivacke, the damage was caused by someone driving a car through the front window — totally redefining the meaning of smash-and-grab.
“Who's crazy enough to do something like this,” said Grant Donahoe, an Aguanga resident who drove in Thursday to sign up for insurance plan for his iPhone. “It looks like something on the news.” Donahoe told the North County Times.
Temecula police confirmed in a news release that the car involved in the burglary became stuck inside the store because of the large security gate installed just recently. The suspect was eventually able to free the vehicle after ramming the gate several times in order to flee the scene.
“Once inside the store, several suspects exited the vehicle and attempted to steal various electronics,” Sgt. Spivacke told the Temecula Patch. “An inventory is being conducted by employees to determine the extent of the theft.”
Yellow crime-scene tape still surrounded the Apple store late in the afternoon while police review surveillance footage to determine the car’s make and model as the investigation continues.
Fortunately no employees were present in the store at the time of the burglary. The Temecula police are asking anyone with information to call their tip line at (951) 696-3000.
