Analyst Peter Misek, from Canaccord Adams is hurled out speculation in his notes to clients on Wednesday that Apple may announce a deal to launch iPhone with Verizon at next weeks media event. An iPhone running on Verizon's CDMA network is expected to begin production in March to make a June delivery to customers.
"We believe there is a good chance," writes Canaccord Adams' Peter
Misek in a note to clients Wednesday, "that the 'One more thing…' part
of next week’s presentation may include two iPhone-related
announcements: namely, the release of iPhone OS 4.0 and the unveiling
of iPhone 4G coming to Verizon in June."
Numerous reports assert that Apple's deal with AT&T as the exclusive carrier of iPhone in the U.S. is coming to an end by June, making the timing for a Verizon launch ideal. Opening up Apple's next-gen iPhone to a significantly broader audience.
"We have
ascertained that there is a reasonable chance the Asian supply chain is
prepping for mass production of a new iPhone in March, for availability
in late Q2, likely June. The phone will be carried on Verizon and hence
will operate on the CDMA network; however, it will also support
European GSM and HSPA standards." Misek writes.
The timing of a June 2010 iPhone launch will bode well for many iPhone faithful who will have AT&T contracts expiring this summer. Although I suspect that a majority would not hesitate paying a prorated penalty to make a quick exit from AT&T's spotty 3G service and frequent dropped calls.
Misek went on to say that "Tiered data plans are imminent, he believes, including an unlimited data plan from Verizon." He also confirmed reports that the new iPhone OS 4.0 will support "OS wide multi-touch gestures,
multitasking, introduce graphical UI changes to simplify navigation,
and possibly a new way to sync the contacts and calendar apps."
Apple's potential announcement may explain why Verizon spent the remainder of 2009 hammering AT&T over 3G coverage with a flood of brilliant TV ads, firing off a preemptive strike at AT&T, aimed at capturing the minds of iPhone customers with fat 3G map domination. Sales of more than 37 million iPhones for fiscal 2010 were included in Misek's forecast.
